Gay Salvador
Just like any major metropolitan area, Salvador has a very active gay life: most homosexuals from smaller cities move here because they find refuge in the big city.

However, there are differences. For starters, gays are a lot more socially mixed amongst straight people: there is mutual respect from their families, neighbors and co-workers. This all means that you can be as gay as you want and you won’t get egged on (as long as you don’t irritate others). Similarly, there is no need for a gay pride parade, as it is celebrated extensively before and during carnival.

This is also one of the reasons why there isn’t a gay residential neighborhood. Barra, however, does have a gay block, with bars and clubs dominating the area.

How to Dress
Dress whatever you always wanted: whether it is neutral or drag, you can do so here at any of the clubs without annoying anyone: Locals are used to transvestites, butch lesbians, clown drags etc.

Love
One word of advice: there are a bunch of gay prostitutes around the city. Should you fall in love and want to bring him/her back, watch out for your stuff in the hotel room. You are better off taking the person to a motel, where you won’t stand a chance of losing anything nor irritating the concierge.

As far as continuing your relationship, just remember this:Brazilians love Brazil. Most don’t want to move anywhere else. This means that in case you fall in love and should that someone fall in love back, you could start planning to move this way instead of the other way round (unless you have loads of money).

Sex
Although people here kiss faster than most places in the world, they are not as promiscuous as one would imagine. You may serial kiss during the night and still go home alone.
The bath houses are a mix of a club and brothel, where anything goes if you spend you money right.
